The Flamel symbolizes the "fixing of the volatile" in alchemy, and in the Fullmetal Alchemist series, it has powerful uses, even being able to weaken the almost physically unstoppable homunculi. The Elric brothers largely display this symbol, partly as homage to their alchemy teacher Izumi Curtis, who has also stated that the symbol is that of her own teacher Dante.
The Transmutation Circle is another powerful symbol used in many alchemical processes, although Edward Elric has become skilled enough not to need one to perform his own complex transmutations. These symbols have continually mesmerized and fascinated people that they are among the most common tattoo designs to be found in different cultures.
